Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand discover the relationship between the significance of hospital exposure to the development of psychological distress among the health workers and frontliners in Malolos, Bulacan. It pays attention to the intensity of the different stressors and factors present in their workplace, as there is a continuous surge in the number of people persons infected by Coronavirus disease in the community. Psychological distress is defined as an unpleasant emotional experience brought by a variety of factors that can be manifested in different forms such as tension, anxiety, mental fatigue, and psychological instability which can lead to severe psychological problems if left untreated (Brody, 2016). 

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

  1. Is there a significant relationship between long working hours and stress levels among the participants?
  2. Is there a negative correlation between a heavy workload to the psychological exhaustion experienced by frontliners and healthcare workers?
  3. Is there a significant relationship between the number of c Coronavirus patients being treated and to the fear and anxiety experienced by between the respondents exposed?

Scope and Delimitations

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the level of hospital exposure and its impact on the development of the different psychological distresses among healthcare workers and frontliners. The key variables of this study are the length and intensity of the exposures and their degree of vulnerability to stressors that can contribute to the psychological distress experienced by these workers, such as depression and anxiety. Moreover, this study considers the current response and set-up in the hospital protocols in this pandemic setting. In addition, hospital-based questionnaires will be administered to the participants, thus, in this way, it ensures that the research questions will be properly answered to obtain the most objective results. 

As stated above, the main participants of this research are the healthcare workers and frontliners who are situated in Malolos, Bulacan. Consequently, these participants were selected since they are the most vulnerable among the population to the different workplace hazards present in the hospital setting. The said research locale comprises more than 10 hospitals that include the Bulacan Medical Center, which is considered as one of the biggest teaching and training hospitals in the province. The duration of data gathering will be conducted on December 1 to 8, 2020 Data gathering will be conducted between December 1st to December 8th 2020.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to establish an understanding of the relationship between hospital exposure and its impact on the development of psychological distress among healthcare workers in Malolos. The results of this study will help determine the stressors that trigger psychological distress among healthcare workers. This study will be beneficial to the following:

Medical Frontliners/Healthcare Workers. This study will help medical frontliners and healthcare workers gain knowledge about the disadvantages and risks caused brought by prolonged hospital exposure. Furthermore, they will be able to determine the stressors that may trigger psychological distress during their work shifts. This study will also be beneficial for their safety and in maintaining good mental health.

City Government of Malolos. The results of this study will help the local government establish policies that will benefit the mental wellbeing of healthcare workers. The local government may initiate actions and implement interventions that will focus more on this matter; hence, through this, the problem with the increasing number amount of doctors with psychological distress can be addressed with the proper enactment of laws and policies.

Future Researchers. Lastly, this research may serve as a basis for other researchers who will study the same topic. This can help fill in knowledge gaps and at the same time present newfound information. In addition, this study can also serve as the framework for future studies and generate solutions and interventions for the mental well-being of healthcare workers.
